Your car's engine can generate so much heat while running on the road that if there was nothing to stop it from heating up it could cause serious damage to the car and the passengers. Although the car's engine needs to avoid overheating, the engine does need a constant amount of heat to make it run efficiently, since a cold engine would not perform as well. The engine's components get damaged easily and such damage can cause more pollutants to be put out into the environment. An efficient cooling system is in place to control the heat generated in the engine. The car's cooling system absorbs the heat and controls the temperature to help the engine run efficiently. A liquid coolant runs throughout the engine, the cooling system includes the radiator, dissipating extreme heat and keeping temperatures constant.
When your car's engine starts to overheat frequently, this means that there is a problem with the cooling system. The liquid coolant that flows throughout the engine has to come into contact with the surfaces it runs through to effectively absorb and manage the hot temperatures. Pockets of air in the cooling system can affect the coolant's performance by hindering contact on the surfaces it flows through and causing the temperature to rise. The air trapped in your cooling system is usually introduced when you get your car serviced and changes are done to the cooling system. The air must be released from the cooling system, and the process commonly known as burping your car's cooling system involves a few steps that one can do in the garage.
- Prepare a bottle of coolant. The car's engine has to be cool before attempting any changes to it. If you've just used your car, then park it in the garage for a while and wait for it to cool down. Prepare a fresh bottle of coolant that you will need to add to the car's cooling system.
- Add coolant in the radiator. Take off the radiator's cap and add a mixture of 50 percent water and 50 percent coolant in the radiator. Add the same mixture in other places that hold the coolant, such as the overflow or coolant reservoir.
- Run the engine. When you have filled the radiator and coolant reservoir with the coolant mixture, leave the radiator cap off and start the engine. Leaving the radiator cap off while the engine runs allows the trapped air in the cooling system to surface and release itself out from the radiator. This may take a little time to accomplish, so be patient. You will notice bubbles forming at the radiator's opening, so this means air is surfacing, and you might notice the coolant level dropping, which means the coolant has filled those places where air used to occupy. You can stop the engine for a while and repeat the process until there are no more air bubbles and the temperature gauge is constant.
