If you were caught driving under the influence (DUI) of any alcoholic or narcotic substances and were convicted anywhere in the United States, it is likely that the court will ask you to attend a DUI class. As you may know, laws relating to DUI conviction and related actions vary from state to state in the United States.
Generally speaking, when a court asks a person to attend a DUI class, it is basically because it wants the person to be aware of the risks involved to oneself and the public at large from driving under the influence. These classes give a realistic picture of incidents that can occur when a person is DUI; what the body goes through when it is under the influence, the disorientation and so on. Basically, DUI classes are aimed at orienting and making a person more aware of the consequences of DUI and thereby turning them into responsible and mature citizens. A penal provision for ensuring the person does attend the mandatory or recommended DUI classes include suspension of a driving license until the person satisfactorily completes a DUI course and is certified by the school recognized to render this course.
So, given this background, how does one go about choosing a DUI class? It's quite simple actually, read on.
- Firstly, look up all DUI classes in your area and most certainly within the state where you have been ordered to attend the DUI class. Since traffic laws are slightly different from state to state, so are the DUI class compliance requirements. It is quite possible that the classes rendered by a school in a particular state may not fulfill requirements of the courts from the neighboring or other states. You need to attend a recognized school within the state, and if this is not possible, then check back with the court for a syllabus of the out-of-state schools to find out if any are compatible with the court's requirements. The court officers or case officers should be able to help you.
- If your driving license is revoked or suspended and you cannot afford a cab or do not have access to public transportation, common sense prevails and tells you to choose a school nearest to your place of your residence or your work place.
- The good news is, with the advent of the Internet, there are quite a few schools offering online classes as well. This means you can attend them at your convenience with minimal disturbance to your regular routine. Some online schools charge an extra fee.
- If choosing to attend a physical class, then choices of late morning classes, late evening classes and weekend classes are generally available to suit your primary vocation of work, school, family duties, etc.
- While choosing your course, it is best advised to study what the court has actually ordered you to undergo. This is because the level of classes to be attended or the courses to be taken vary depending upon nature of offense, whether it is the first time, whether you were under the influence of alcohol, drugs, entertainment substances, etc. Make sure to read the court order clearly. You can show it to the DUI school as well, prior to enrollment.
Lastly, do not miss attending the course, it will reflect on your records and attract stiff penalties for not obeying the law.
