Highway safety is a very important issue, since a large number of travelers use highways for their daily commutes. As such, it is imperative that we maintain the safety of our highways, in order to avoid accidents that can cause injuries or death. Maintaining highway safety is not merely the responsibility of federal safety, state safety, or highway regulations; it is also the responsibility of the motorists to maintain the safety of their cars, and thus improve the security of our highways.

The best way to ensure the security of our highways is to get all the sectors involved to do their own part. Here are some ways that highway safety can be maintained:

  • Federal Safety Regulations. The first step toward maintaining highway safety is the development and proper implementation of rules and regulations governing the use of public highways. Of course, these regulations must also be properly disseminated and explained to the public, to ensure that they have the maximum effect on the motorists’ attitudes and behavior toward highway safety. If developed and implemented correctly, federal safety highway regulations can greatly reduce the incidence of highway accidents.
  • State Safety Regulations. Another way that highway safety can be maintained and improved is through the development and implementation of state safety regulations. The most important role of the state safety department in highway safety is the management of highway access points. Several studies have been conducted regarding highway safety, and the results indicate that highway safety is greatly affected by the locations, the number, and the designs of the access points that lead into the highway. This is because an access point introduces new movement and speed changes from incoming vehicles, which may interfere with the normal traffic flow of those vehicles, which are already on the highway. It has been proven that when multiple access points are located in close proximity to one another, the ensuing overlap in traffic patterns significantly increases the chances of potential conflicts in motorists’ movements. Thus, it appears sensible to ensure that the number of access points into the highway is limited to a few necessary and well-spaced entryways, to reduce the conflicts that changing traffic patterns typically induce.
  • Insurance Safety. Some insurance companies work with one another to fund research for improving highway safety among motorists. One example of this is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Their main goal is to decrease the number of motor vehicle accidents which occur on the highways, and in effect, to bring down the number of injuries and the amount of property damage that occur during these accidents. It also publishes ratings for the more popular motor vehicles on the market, and for other auto safety-related consumer products, such as car seats for children.
  • Individual Car Safety. For the motorists themselves, the best line of defense in terms of highway safety is to ensure that their cars are fit for highway driving. Check your brakes, your tires, and your engine before you proceed. Once on the highway, maintain the proper speed, and follow traffic and safety regulations. If you have a child, make sure that he or she is properly fitted into a car seat before traveling.

Highway safety is an issue that must be addressed by all sectors involved, if a high level of safety for everyone is to be maintained.
