How To Shut Off a Car Alarm that Won't Quit

There’s nothing more embarrassing than being in or near your own vehicle when the car alarm is set off and it won’t quit. The first thing you should do is to not panic and focus on the task at hand. Next, you can use these simple steps to shut off the car alarm.

  1. The first thing to consider, especially if this is a new car alarm, is that you may have been in error. Consult the owner’s manual and follow the instructions to turn the alarm off. Even if you’ve had the car alarm for a while, you may have accidentally done something wrong, so it’s still a good idea to check the owner’s manual.
  2. If you’re still unsuccessful, try putting the key in the ignition of the vehicle and turning the vehicle on. In most cars, this will shut off the car alarm.
  3. If the car alarm still won’t quit, then you will need to remove the car alarm fuse. To do this, you will first need to locate the fuse box on the vehicle. Most fuse boxes are underneath the steering column and to the left.
  4. Next, locate the car alarm fuse. There should be a diagram on the lid of the fuse box. Also, the owner’s manual of your vehicle will have a diagram of the different fuses. If your car alarm wasn’t factory installed, you will not find a label for the car alarm fuse. There’s still no need to panic. Just start removing fuses, and if the car alarm doesn’t shut off, then replace the fuse and try another one. You can’t do any damage to your vehicle or accessories by doing this.
  5. To remove the fuse, use a fuse puller, which may be located in the fuse box of your vehicle. If you don’t have fuse pullers, you can use needle nose pliers. If you don’t have either of these tools available to you, you can try to pull the fuse out with your fingers.
  6. Once the fuse is pulled from the vehicle, your car alarm should be shut off. You can try replacing the same fuse back in the fuse box, to see if the fuse is faulty. However, you would be better off replacing the car alarm fuse with another fuse of the same type. These are very inexpensive and can be purchased at any auto care store.
