Whenever you have your car serviced at an auto body shop, it pays to be knowledgeable about the different services you'd need to keep your vehicle in tiptop shape. If you're like most people, you might not really know that much about maintaining your vehicle. You might need to bring an adviser, be it a friend more well-versed on vehicles or a professional mechanic. However, some auto shops hire an automotive service writer who would write down the customer's concerns, and who could act as "translator" between the customer and the auto mechanic.

Here's a quick checklist of what you could expect and request during an automobile service visit:

  • Parts inspection and replacement. The important car parts and equipment that need to be inspected include the following:

  • leads = check for deterioration; but they usually last for 10 years
  • air filter = have it cleaned or replaced when necessary.
  • spark plugs = they reveal the engine's condition; for example, greasy spark plugs could indicate that the engine has sprung an oil leak. Have them inspected and ask also if they'd need to be replaced.
  • bulbs = check to see if all lights are working; if not, have the bulbs replaced.
  • steering = have it checked for response time
  • wiper blades
  • air conditioning = have it checked for efficiency
  • safety belts
  • Brake service. Although you can easily do it on your own, be advised that many auto shops offer free brake inspection services. Start with the pads; do they still have good depth left? Check the response time on your brakes; also check the brake fluid level to see if it's maintained to the correct amount. You may also have your auto mechanic check your brake rotors to see if they need to be replaced.

  • Oil change. You'd have to change your oil every 3-5,000 miles; with each oil change you'd have to replace the oil filter as well. With an oil change, old, contaminated oil will be drained out (and replaced with new oil) to help keep your engine running smooth and clean.

  • Tires. You could ask if your tires need to be rotated, or if they'd need to be replaced. You could also ask for other tire services such as wheel alignment and balancing. Also, you might need to have your tires inflated: low tire pressure could cause reduced gas mileage or even tire damage.

  • Battery. You could have the auto mechanic conduct a computerized battery starting/charging test to ensure that it's still in good condition.

  • Automobile paint. If you need to have your automobile repainted, it's good to wise up on the best paint options. For example, make sure that the shop uses self-etching primer, which helps in preventing corrosion. They should also use high quality paints such as those composed of 2 part polyurethane paints whose characteristics include richness and resistance. Paints to avoid include enamels and lacquers, which are not very durable. Make sure also that there are no visible scratches or imperfections once the paint job is finished.

  • Other services. While you're there at the auto repair shop, ask about their other offered services such as automobile towing. Here's a tip: if you are able to sign up for many services in the same automobile service center you might have a better chance at discounts and lower rates on their services.

For better rates on your automobile service, make sure that you hunt for coupons that would cut the price of the service. If you check out major auto services' websites you could usually find a page for their available coupons and discounts. Or better yet, why not opt to learn how to do minor repairs on your own, so you could do free vehicle maintenance? Good luck!
