How To Become a Licensed Daycare Provider

A daycare center is an easy to manage home-based business especially if you love working with children. A daycare professional gives a valuable service to both parents and children. The parents can go about their busy schedules and not worry about their children, knowing that they are in good hands and in the company of other children. This is also advantageous for the children as they will learn socialization at an early age.

If you are interested in becoming a licensed daycare provider, here are things you should consider.

  • Before starting a daycare center, make sure that you meet all the requirements set by your state. Most states require that a daycare provider be more than 18 years of age. Some also require that you must have a Social Security Number. Experience in looking after young children is also required. It may be necessary that you enroll in a training school before you are given a daycare provider license. While some states only require a high school diploma, most require a certificate that you have completed a community college course. On the other hand, other states require a college degree in child development.
  • Check the condition of your family first, before applying for a daycare provider license. Sometimes, your application for a license will be denied based on your family or the people who occupy your home. A health check may be required in order to make sure that the children will not be put at risk because of any health condition of the members of your family. Also, any abuse complaint record of any member or the family could cause your application for a license to be turned down.
  • Your home should have all the necessary equipments to run a daycare as this will also be inspected. You must have a telephone, a kitchen and a bathroom. These are the basic things that you must be able to provide. You will need to prepare nutritious meals and snacks for the children.
  • Your home should be clean. Environment is very important. Health inspectors would want to make sure that the children are safe from germs, bacteria and viruses so as to keep them healthy and happy. If they observe that your home is not conducive to children, they might go against giving you a license.
  • Your social attitude will also play a very important part if you want to run a daycare center. You must be willing to look after children of different backgrounds and cultures. You must be open minded and willing to take care of children regardless of age, gender, race, religion or natural origin. Do not show favoritism. Treat each child with love and respect.
  • It is best if you have a back up connection with other daycare centers in the same vicinity. Two or three back-ups are recommended. This is needed in preparation for days or events when you will get sick or unable to work for some emergency reasons. The parents or guardians of the children must be given this information early on.

These are all the things you need to become a licensed Daycare Provider. Keep in mind that with this line of work you should provide unlimited access to the parents of the children. And as children are very playful and mischievous by nature, you must also constantly monitor them. Never leave them unattended and always give them the love and support they need. Surely, your daycare center will be both profitable and fun to manage.
