How To Choose Employee Services

Employee services are any type of support services that provide benefits of some type to your employees.  Business services of this type include payroll services, health insurance plans, estate planning, profit sharing, and retirement planning.  While some companies prefer to manage these types of services in-house, more are finding it cost-effective to outsource them.  If you have come to that decision, here is how to find the right employee services to benefit you and your employees.

First, it is important to identify what you want from the employee services you consider.  For example, if you plan on outsourcing your payroll, make a list of what functions are required.  Does the service offer the possibility of automatic deposits?  Can your employees have some funds routed to a checking account and others to a savings account?  How about withholding for taxes, or for other purposes like garnishments or child support?  Knowing what type of financial services support you need will make it easier to focus on the right employee service and avoid the rest.

A second step in the process is compiling and following up on references related to any of the employee services that seem to be a good fit.  There are several ways to go about this task.  You can ask around in the local business community and find out who is already using the service, and what they think of them.  Many services will provide a list of references upon request.  In both instances, make sure to ask questions that require more than a simple “yes” or “no” response.  Listen closely to the answers, as they can often provide you with insights that may affect your decision.

Don’t forget to use the Internet to find out everything you can about the employee service providers you are considering.  Searches using keywords and keyword phrases like “ABC employee services”, “service support for employees at ABC”, or even a more focused search like “employee health insurance services offered by ABC” can lead you to web pages containing reviews, critiques, and possibly even forums that discuss the scope and quality of work of the service.  Here again, you can come across tidbits of information that would be hard to find otherwise, and could keep you from making a poor choice.

While you may be tempted to rush through the process of settling on a specific company to provide different employee services, make it a point to take your time.  You want to make sure that whomever you choose will see that your employees are paid on time, have reliable and affordable health insurance, and can work with a reliable company to build a nest egg for the future.  The time you spend today will mean you won’t have to waste time in the future dealing with the results of working with an employee service that is not up to your expectations.
