How To Design a Menu Board

The menu board is one of the most important signs that you will hang in your restaurant. The menu board is what most diners will look at first when they visit your establishment. Because of this, you need to create a menu board design that is easy to change – especially if you are running a restaurant that frequently changes menu depending on the available ingredients – and which is visually appealing and which will whet the appetite of whoever visits your restaurant. Here’s how you can design the menu board.

  • Lighting. First of all, you need to make sure that your menu board has sufficient lighting. Your menu board can get its lighting from various sources, such as natural lighting from windows, or from artificial lighting. As much as possible, you should combine natural light with artificial lighting. This means that you should place your menu board in a location where natural sunlight will be able to reach it. But, you also need to make sure that the menu board has a light of its own for when night comes. Usually, you can design a menu board with small lights that are attached directly at the side of the board. Or, you can add additional lights in the walls where you will place the menu board.
  • Sectioning. Next, create several sections for the menu board. The sections should have a layout that will allow you to change parts of the menu board without having to disturb the other sections. The basic sections that you need to add is the section for the menu board title, and sections for the various types of food that you offer. A general restaurant will have sections for main dishes, for deserts, for drinks, for appetizers, et cetera. If you are an Italian restaurant, you can have a separate section for pizzas, a section for Italian deserts, a section for pasta, et cetera. Keep in mind that each section will need a subsection where you will place the prices, the description, and if possible, the pictures of the dishes.
  • Descriptions. Next, add in a short description for each dish. This is especially important if you are offering specialty dishes, or exotic dishes. You cannot expect all of your visitors to know the specialty dishes. To give them an idea of what the dish is, provide a short but appetite whetting description of the food. After the short description, make sure that you also add in the price for the dish.
  • Pictures. Finally, consider adding pictures of the dish on the menu board. This is a bit more difficult, as it will require you to have a larger menu board which will allow you to post pictures. But, pictures are the greatest way for you to entice your customers into buying the dishes. When taking pictures, make sure that you get clear photographs that are focused only on the dish.

With these steps, you should be able to create your very own menu board design. With a well designed menu board, you should be able to attract customers and get them to try out all of your specialties.
