When you have a business, it is important to make it grow and reach out to a larger market. Any business needs a good sales department, and this is where a good sales manager comes into play. Employees need a leader to keep them focused and to keep them working on reaching goals. A sales manager is someone who knows how to lead the sales force into building better business for the company.

  • Get someone who knows the business. To start, you need to know where and how to find the right sales manager for your business. Make it a point to hire someone who already has experience in your field or industry. This ensures that he knows what he's doing regardless of the circumstance, and that he knows the nuances, and will not need to do guesswork.
  • Ask for a business plan. Sales is one part of business that is concrete and measurable. You can therefore determine how competent and capable a prospective business manager is by having them present their own plans for improving sales, and how much new business they think they can bring in.  Take note of a person's communication skills in a way that you check his sentence construction (how he expresses what he wants to get across), coherence in thought (if all he says is of relevance to the topic), critical thinking (answering questions with sense abruptly), and his overall conversational skills since he is going to need these as a manager.
  • Look into people skills. Hire someone who is in touch with employee needs for a more harmonious work environment, but can still drive people to work smart to achieve the company's goals. A manager who knows how to satisfy his employees' professional needs will definitely get better performance from the people who follow him. A good manager can keep employees' spirits up even when things are bad, and his positive thinking is definitely a plus in helping boost sales.
  • Find someone who believes in the company or product. A good business manager will believe in the product and service he is selling no matter what. If at start, he is skeptical, he will find positive aspects, and use these as a selling point. These kinds of people help boost the company's morale and productivity, because they take things from a fresh perspective.
  • Be practical. Do not just look for an idealist. Get to know an applicant if he can actually pursue what he says he can do as a sales manager. One should not be pretentious, and promise unattainable goals, so keep on the lookout for people who might just be trying to look good without having the ability to back it up by their actions.

You don't necessarily have to find and hire an external applicant, but you can also look for good leaders from within your ranks. Encourage your employees to give you a business plan, and try to nurture these employees as future managers. Be open to internal applications as well, and consider the length of their service, their performance as an employee, and their potential to lead.
