Homeless shelters are short-term dwellings for destitute people. Usually established in urban areas, they are similar to disaster housing or emergency shelters. Homeless shelters and emergency shelters differ from each other in many aspects. But the most prevalent one clearly distinguishes one from the other. If a homeless shelter accommodates only sleeping during the night, emergency shelters allow clients to stay there the whole day with meals to eat.
Find these shelters if you or someone you are concerned about needs help.
- Grab a telephone book and find services in your area. Some people just get the yellow pages and there they can find the headings, charity or any related topic to the issue you are after.
- Write down the telephone number and address of the agency to contact. Visit the address that you have and see for yourself the poverty stricken people gathered in this agency or having contact with this agency.
- The agency accepts checks, groceries and other household items that could help the clients, especially the emergency clients.
- If you opt to help a family through a homeless shelter, ask the permission of the person in charge of the agency. They may have a rule about it; sometimes they don’t allow this.
- Help the homeless people understand their civil rights.
To find a shelter for yourself while you are trying to get employed or be on your feet, the following suggestions would help:
- Talk to potential sources like church people who could recommend a homeless shelter, which is totally free, or a cheap room, which you can rent.
- Keep safely personal papers, which you may use as proofs to support your personality.
- Consider the proximity of transport and other services to the area where you propose to settle as a homeless occupant.
- Once you have landed on a shelter, keep your eyes and ears open to rules and regulations. Look at the neighborhood as well as the other occupants.
Homelessness is a sign of extreme poverty. However, some people become homeless because of disasters that may have happened. Their houses may have been damaged and blown off by a typhoon or washed out by floods. Some disasters include landslides, which could cover an entire household or even an entire community. Homeless people from these disastrous events are people who could start anew when given the help that they realty need.
The other type of homelessness is where the involved people are really poor. They are the people who never had the opportunity to stay in a real house. They are the people who move every night to look for a sheltered vacant house or building so they can rest for the night.
Shelter is among the basic needs to be satisfied. Homeless people cannot afford services like car loans or telephone lines that require permanent residence status. There are people without shelters who need our help. In poor Asian countries people live in shanties which cannot be considered homes. As such, children cannot go to school because of lack of employment. Being human, it is our duty to extend our charity. Helping people, especially children from homeless shelters will lessen the problems of our society.
