How To Get a Copy of Business License

As a business owner, you know how important your license is. Your original license may get misplaced or become damaged. It is important to know what to do to obtain a copy of your original license in case state inspectors or new clients ever ask for it.  You need to be able to get copies of your state business license and your county business license, as most businesses are licensed through both agencies.

If you need a duplicate state business license, it is easy to order one online. Start by visiting the website for your state's Secretary of State. Most states have an area on their official websites marked "Business". Look through the website's links to find how to get to this part of the site. In the Business section of the website, there should be a link for "Online Business Filing Records." Click on this link.

You should now have the option to search for your business by name. Type in your information and click on the Submit button. A screen should come up with your business license information. Click on this link to view your information.

Your state business license now is on the screen. In order to obtain a copy, you must print it. In most web browsers, you accomplish this by going to the file menu (on top) and choosing print. If you can afford to do so, you may want to print several copies in case something happens to your new copy.

This procedure allows you to easily obtain copies of your state business license. It is a little bit more difficult to get a copy of your county license.

Most counties do not post license information online. You will have to visit your county office and speak to someone in the Business License and Registration Department. Make sure you bring your driver's license or other state-issued ID so you can prove that you are the owner of the business. You may also need to bring your receipt for the original license.

The procedures for getting a copy of your business license are not difficult. It is, however, time-consuming; many states and counties may charge a fee to provide you with a duplicate license. Once you get your copies, make sure to store them safely. The last thing you or your business needs is to not be able to produce the copy of its licenses during a surprise inspection or other interaction with a government agency.
