Employee polices and guidelines may be hard to recall, but a series of small steps by the management team can help all workers to remember what the policies are.

The new employees’ orientation held by the Human Resources department is the first line for learning and understanding policies. It is in that orientation that various scenarios are played out and possible answers given to see how the new employee thinks and to what extent they are aware of the standards set by that company. Employees are given manuals with information, and are reminded to use those manuals. This orientation is usually filled with information, and most of what the employee will need to know regarding policies will be stated there.

Have the direct supervisor do a three to five minute presentation each week on a policy. The supervisor should ask the employee what policy is unclear or what policy would they like to know more about. If the employee is not forthcoming with a policy, then the supervisor can choose one. The supervisor should always ensure that every worker has a manual with the policies.

Every quarter the HR department should host a reminder program, reminding workers of the manuals, books and pamphlets they received during orientation and what they contain. The HR should, and usually does, have an open door policy in which workers can come in and have obscure, difficult and little known facts and policies explained to them.

The company should further have various policies placed around the facility on posters that are eye catching. Adults tend to learn with colors, large letters, and eye catching inventory. The workplace must itself depict the policies so that workers will be able to see the policies in place each time they enter the facility.

There should be consistency in applying the policies, for that too is how employees will learn. If someone is shown clemency then the basis for the clemency must be given to all. Whatever method is chosen it must be across the board, and applied consistently and with rigor all the way.

One of the best ways to teach the policies is to have regular workers tell each other. The management team can choose informal leaders, based on how workers relate to each other, and use them as the source of information and instruction regarding policies, so that all workers are at all times kept informed as to the requirements for continued employment at that business.
