The beginning stages of your first experiences in marketing your online business will undoubtedly be a bit awkward.  However, it's nothing to worry about.  While the process will definitely be time consuming when you begin, it will get better as you progress.  Practice makes perfect as they say.  One of the most efficient ways to gather the best prospects, or people who may be interested in what you will be providing, is to use social media.  Now, social media is effective for many reasons, however, the biggest reason is that it's so well targeted.  There is a social networking website for almost any topic.  Business - Twitter, art - Deviant Art, and basic connectivity - Facebook.  Which are just a few examples of the biggest names.

Why is targeted marketing the best way to go?  Now, one of the biggest mistakes that online businessmen make is creating ads and/or ad campaigns that don't reach a specific group.  If ads don't reach a certain group, then the level of interest for the people that are reached won't be peaked, and in-turn this creates a loss in profit or in some cases views.  Social network media provides ways to not only build a "friend base" of people who share the same interests as you may require, but they often times facilitate ways to communicate, or to spark a want for a prospect to communicate with you.  This is why social media is so vastly desired with most online marketers.

The first steps in creating your campaign is to decide on how you will approach the situation.  It's probably not a good idea to start off using multiple sites to market your products or services.  That is, if you're new to the world of social media.  Certain operations and functions will be a bit difficult to get used to, even still, some would argue that there is even a kind of social networking etiquette that should be followed.  Which could also pose a more trivial difficulty.

Now then, by this point you've selected your social media source.  Lets say for example that you've chosen a site such as Facebook.  Facebook offers certain marketing campaigns that one could pay for to gain exposure for whatever it is that needs to be exposed.  Because of Facebook's popularity, you could easily gain quite literally thousands of prospects overnight.  Which brings up the next topic.  Popularity gained through a social networking site is relative to the popularity of the social networking site.  This is why you'll find certain ads more present on sites like Facebook or Myspace.  These sites are bigger in search engine rank, which means that there is a higher chance that your ad may have some sort of presence in the search engines.

The most important points that one should take away from this piece are to understand that targeted ads will get you far.  Having ads that are not well targeted will provide fewer results as far as profits or views are concerned.  Also, social networking media is effective, however, it will do the user good to select a site that is higher up in the Google or Yahoo ranks, as this will increase your chances of being seen on the net even if you haven't paid for an ad service.
