A tattoo shop is a place where people go to have tattoos done, usually done by a tattoo artist or professional. Tattoos come in all sizes and shapes, depending on what a person's personal taste, whether it's a small tattoo on the hand or shoulder or a much larger one that may cover the majority of the body!
- A tattoo shop needs to be properly equipped. Adequate hygiene is required in such shops. Therefore a tattooist needs to wash hands often since they work on multiple clients so that no cross contamination will occur. Biohazard containers should be readily available, because you will be working on a lot of skin, and with a lot of blood. Therefore, containers for proper disposal of objects that have come in contact with blood and skin should be available and within reach. A sink has to be installed in a tattoo shop preferably with both hot and cold water. When it comes to large equipment, these have to be wiped regularly with a strong disinfectant.
- Changing needles is another important thing. Infections or diseases may result from a tattooist using a needle on more than one client. In this case "sharps" containers are used. These are filled with needles and they fit into two types:
- Reusable, which are sterilized before reused or
- Single use, which will be disposed of together with other biological wastes.
- Keep your stocks updated. Sterilized and disposable instruments such as ink caps and disposable gloves need to be available and always in stock, as a tattoo cannot and should not be done without them. Keeping an electronic program for such records may help when new stock need to be purchased. Such a program may also help in must-have items such as needles or ink.
- Apart from the equipment and hygiene, other important tasks need to be done when managing a tattoo shop include finance management, client and employee scheduling, and inventory control. You can use software to track sales and other day to day business. Paperwork should be done regularly to prevent backlogs. If there is more than one employee, daily tasks can be assigned to individual employees. The manager should usually be the one to handle the financial aspects of the business.
- What happens during an actual tattooing session? Before the tattooist begins to tattoo the client, the latter is asked to approve the stencil shown by the tattooist. If it is approved, the artist should open new, sterilized needles (which usually are packed), other disposable and sterilized instruments supplies, and fresh ink. Ink should be loaded into disposable ink caps which need to be discarded after each client. Last but not least, an artist needs to know if the client has any skin conditions or if a woman is pregnant or nursing as in certain countries it is illegal to tattoo such clients.
Managing a tattoo shop is just like managing any other service-oriented establishment. You will need to take some safety precautions, though, because of the nature of tattooing.
