Network marketing, also called multi-level marketing or MLM, is a business model that focuses on direct selling. Businesses that sell through network marketing often spend less on advertising campaigns. They rely mostly on their members to sell their products, build hype for the company, and help people run their own direct-sales businesses. Most offer special services or products to members to help them succeed within the system. Some of the more famous network marketing companies are Amway and Mary Kay, for instance.

Members earn compensation in the form of commissions from sales, from recruiting new members, and also from the sales and recruitment by members down your line. To make network marketing a viable business, you have to make sure the system allows you to win.

A company should focus on sales rather than recruits. Critics of network marketing liken these to pyramid schemes. The main difference between the two is that the former relies on product sales while the latter relies simply on money funneled through recruits. While this is true for most network marketing companies, there are some that still rely more on recruits than on sales.

However, relying on recruits provides a limited opportunity for profit. This kind of system favors the earliest recruits while putting the more recent ones at a disadvantage. Make sure the network marketing company really relies on sales, because this will ultimately provide long-term viability, and is a good foundation for any company.

  1. Use the products you are selling. Since this system relies on word-of-mouth instead of advertising, members will have to be a walking billboard for their products. While you can use brochures and fliers to give to prospective consumers, it is still best to be able to give personal testimonies, so your target clientele or potential recruits will see the value in your products.
  2. Purchase business tools in moderation. Most network marketing companies offer support materials for members. These include brochures, booklets and fliers, and even classes on building rapport with strangers. Added services such as these help members while also earning revenue for the company. Some of these actually help users to sell products and recruit people. Others might just be additional expenses that not all members could afford. Try to invest in basic tools without going overboard. If the classes or items do not actually translate into real sales or recruitment, it is best to skip them.
  3. Invest in samples. Most network marketing companies require investment in a basic package to be considered a member. This allows members to use products as well as sell them to others. Members can also create their own samples by allowing potential recruits to try out products on their own. This can generate good advertising for the member and translate to eventual sales or recruits.
  4. Maximize your recruits. Most people attempt to recruit all strangers they meet. This practice is being promoted because of simple statistics. The more people you invite, the greater the possibility that at least one percent of these people will become a member. However, it is also in the member's best interest to target only specific recruits, and not just everyone. Since network marketing bases compensation on sales, recruits that will actually sell products for you are more desirable. They are more liable to work and recruit other people as well. This helps the original member to grow their network by beginning with one valuable recruit.
  5. Take advantage of the system. Network marketing firms use different systems. Some use a straight binary system, where you can only recruit two people under your direct "downline" and you get commissions every time you make a pair. Some would require certain combinations before you can get commissions. Be sure you know the rules, and that you are able to come up with the correct number of recruits, and the correct level of sales. Otherwise, you might not get the most out of your commissions.

Network marketing is a profitable enterprise if you know how to do it right. It involves selling products and selling ideas. While it's not for everyone, if you have a talent for selling, and if you really believe in a company's products and ideals, then you can make network marketing work for you.
