A self-evaluation questionnaire is particularly difficult to construct because questionnaires can be limited with regards to obtaining details that are more specific although it may serve well as a peer evaluation or criteria evaluation. Unlike interviews and reports, these questionnaires lack the human factor, which means that it can be very stiff in searching for the right details. In addition, the people who are being evaluated will be the one to answer these questionnaires, so, accuracy of the data obtained can be a concern.
Being a very useful tool for evaluation, the best way to nullify the weaknesses of this type of data gathering tool is to construct it in the best way possible. So, how is this evaluation tool prepared? Here are some tips that might be useful:
- Know the things that you want to learn. In other words, know the topic. The topic is the center of the questions. If it is all about how a student is fairing in school, then the questions show be all about that.
- Make an outline of the facts that you want to know. An outline acts like a guide. By making one, you are expanding the main topic to more specific subtopics. By doing so, more of the topic’s ideas will come into view. And from this guide, questions that are more specific will be obtained.
- Make simple yet very specific questions out of your outline. If your outline has a subtopic pertaining to the satisfaction of an employee about his position, like in a work evaluation, a question asking about the level of satisfaction that the worker is having in relation to his current job position will be necessary. If you will give too many categories to choose from, your participants might get confused and give inaccurate answers.
- Follow the basic format of a self-evaluation questionnaire. It is important that the name of the participant should be requested in the form. Other details might be dependent on who the participants are, what they do, or what the data that need to be gathered are. If it involves a student, like in an education evaluation, information regarding the class grade level might need to be placed on the form.
- Provide complete and comprehensive instructions. A questionnaire’s instructions are like one-way extensions of your thought. It should discuss about how the questions should be answered and where the answers should be placed. Instructions on whether to shade or check a box should be given, especially, if machine readers will check the answers.
