How To Select a Business Location

Selecting a business location depends solely on the type of business you are in.  You must know the customers you want to service and where they like to be.  There are many options when it comes to business location, and nowadays you can add cyberspace to the list as well.  In fact, most businesses are located in the brick and mortar world as well as cyberspace.  Some are located only in one; some are located only in the other. Depending on the type of business you are in, the best choice for you should be obvious.

If you want to start a retail business and don’t have a lot of room to stock your products, then you might want to select online as your business location.  You can start a drop shipping business so you don’t have to have a lot of items in stock.  If you have a lot of seed money and can hire a store staff, you might want to start a brick and mortar store in a populated location.  If you can afford this, this is an excellent option for some.

If you are starting an administrative or accounting type of business, you probably want to select a business location that is easy for your staff to get to.  You want to be located in a quiet area with other similar businesses in case you have to have business meetings or client meetings.  If you are starting a fun and creative business like a graphic design business or fashion design business, you might want to locate your business downtown in a creative and interesting area where you might find boutiques and shopping.  Even though there might not be a lot of other businesses like yours around, your location will help to speak to your business’ creativity.

If you are opening a restaurant, you want to select a business location that has adequate parking and that is safe for people at night.  You want to have a location appealing to the type of clientele you want to attract.  The same is true if you’re opening a bar or night club.  You want to try and find a location that is as safe as possible at night, where there is a lot of taxicab access for your inebriated customers.

When selecting a business location simply describe your customer, their transportation, their safety, your zoning restrictions, your budget, and your aesthetic surroundings.  Your business location will become clear once you’ve defined these things.
