You may have developed a skill for repairing computers early on as a child, or even as an adult from repairing your own computer whenever it broke down, because getting technicians was too costly. Or maybe you just loved tinkering with computers to see how they worked. If you think your tinkering nature is good enough to start your own computer repair business then consider the following points before setting up shop.
- Get certification. Although you may have successfully repaired several of your friends and family’s computer, and even your own, it does not immediately make you a credible technician. Becoming a certified computer technician will build your profile as a credible technician that people would trust with their computers. You might consider enrolling online for computer repair courses or go to a physical class. Look for schools offering computer training courses and enroll in their classes. If you don’t have the time to go to a school then you can search online for training.
Your training will focus on computer related elements such as computer performance evaluation, hardware maintenance, programming, end user efficiency, networking, and networking just to name a few. You will be getting complete training in each subject and get the chance to work on real life situations. Advantages of getting instructions in a physical school are that the classes are interactive and you get to use tools and equipment in a lab for simulated problems. Getting online instruction would mean you have to pay for your own equipment if you don’t have them available and simulate your own problems.
As a certified computer repair technician, your clients will have no problem trusting you to do repairs on their computer, because it will tell them that you are dedicated enough to your profession to learn everything about repairing computers.
- Learn basic business management skills. Even if you have the skills to diagnose and repair all types of computer problems, it doesn’t mean that you will become successful in the computer repair business. You need to learn basic business skills to run your shop successfully. You might be overpricing your customers or you might not be charging enough to cover costs. Scheduling tasks and repairs in your shop maybe overlapping and you may not be optimizing the time you need to get all the repairs done on time. You have to learn basic marketing skills too, to promote your computer repair shop. You have to find ways to tell people you are out there and you can repair their computers.
These are some of the factors to consider if you want to start your own computer repair business, because you can’t just be repairing from your garage and expect potential customers to trust you.
