When we think creativity, we think art, and most of us would probably immediately picture visual art. There's a lot more to creativity than just that the idea of being creative. Creativity is all about thinking outside the box to make something that has never been seen before or use an idea, product or concept in a way that was not even imagined before.
In the realm of business, creativity is king. The players in the world of the corporate mavens may not exactly be using paints, mounds of clay or music to create their masterpiece, but their instruments are just as sophisticated as just as nuanced to appeal to the senses of their market.
Starting with the most obvious, creativity works well for the company that harnesses it to highlight its strengths. Clothing lines hire the best minds in the realm of fashion to come up with smashing designs. To sell apparel, they need to get the best in the world of photography, hair and make up to come up with the best publicity and marketing campaign. All of these will be nothing if they don't have a model who will be the canvas for this project. In this setup, everyone involved in the project is an artist with ample creative inputs to the resulting product.
But to take the creativity concept further, think about how mavens have expanded their business and expanded their operations through creative liberties. Donald Trump was a well-respected, well-to-do real estate magnate who owns valuable properties across America. While all people expected him to be putting up the next big skyscraper or the next luxury hotel in some gambling Mecca, no one expected him really to delve into the field of television. While he has certainly not been invisible to the public eye, he chose to put himself out there with a show called The Apprentice.
Aside from using it as a platform to promote his projects add prestige to the Trump brand, it also allowed him to transform himself into a commodity. Products and services companies now pay big bucks to be featured on his show. He didn't exactly need the money, but a few extra million dollars shouldn't hurt right? Aside from having the show, he has also gained the rights to the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants. No one would have ever seen this coming in a million years, but he had the gusto to go after the things that could make money. His creative mind was able to figure out solutions that may have been out of character so it was, in the end, a successful enterprise and a gamble well taken.
Another application of creativity is knowing what the consumers really want. Sometimes it's not really about breaking the mold and doing radical changes about business operations. The best companies always use creativity to tap the grassroots and listen in on what they're really thinking. By using the information derived from this, a business will be able to come up with campaigns, products and approaches that would be more suitable for the current market.
Business is not a hard science. There are no set of rules that would assure you of success. Think of it as an art - and in art, the most creative people thrive.
