A company's set of ethical guidelines is the embodiment of a business' core values. The Human Resources department is the arm of the company which is most concerned with the implementation of these ethical guidelines. The idea of having the HR department is to keep the company in line with business ideals as well as making sure that each employee is being treated and compensated well within the confines of the company.

  • Hiring employees. It all starts in the hiring. The law in most countries requires companies to not be swayed by race, gender or religion (or lack thereof) in deciding which candidate to hire. Make sure that your people are familiar with this piece of legislature. Should somebody file a suit in the courts of law, it can start a media firestorm that can eventually be to the detriment of your company even if you do win the case. A meritocratic approach should be done in all cases. Instead of focusing on things that the candidate can't do anything about like her ethnic background, look at the rest of his/her resume. How was he as a student? Was she a great co-worker during his last job? What did his boss have to say when you asked him to be a character reference? These bases are a lot fairer if you really want to come up with an acceptable and sound decision.
  • Employee compensation and benefits. The next issue deals with how you actually take care of your employees. Any respectable company should have a comprehensive list of benefits and allowances that make it a privilege to work for that business. Employees should also be given a chance to rest and find recreation through leaves. Should one of your people get sick, he or she should be able to receive benefits to help his or her with medical bills. The same is true for female employees who may get pregnant during her tenure in the company.

It is in fact true that a company's true colors are shown with how well or poorly they treat their employees. If they can't value their workforce, how can they then value those who need their products and services? Aside from benefits, companies should also set aside funds, time and resources to promote a healthy community of professionals. Small parties and dinners make it more likely to synergize the efforts of one another. A team is always stronger when the individuals within the collective are confident and comfortable in the company of each other.

Should anything call for any investigation, all irregularities should be handled in a transparent manner.

  • Playing fair. Honesty and integrity are valued in business circles so such things should not be taken lightly and hidden behind closed doors. If a business is publicly listed, then you have a responsibility to report finances to your shareholders transparently, using fair accounting principles.

In the end, business ethics is just about doing the right thing in the fairest way possible. Businesses may have to make tough decisions that might break some hearts and pockets along the way, but as long as the people are informed about how the system works, it would be easy to stick to your own set of guidelines and remaining ethical in your dealings.
