Make Better Use of Time
Many, if not all of us, want to lead productive lives. We would like to get as much done as possible in a single work day, leaving the office with a sense of accomplishment, and actually helping the company by coming out with an excellent output. Given the fast pace of modern life, chances are, you are also competing with a number of people in the office. This kind of competitive thinking is not for everyone. While some may thrive on the idea of competing with others, some people find this kind of thinking slightly over-the-top, and would rather focus on bettering their career on their own terms. The common denominator here, however, is that we all want to make use of our valuable time, and we would like to do this in the most productive way possible. Here are a few tips on how to do that.
- Stop procrastinating. One of the biggest time wasters is procrastination. You may find yourself procrastinating on a task because you feel that it isn’t very high on your priority list, or it’s too easy to complete, or you can do it anytime anyway. Procrastinating will lead you to dismiss the task at hand, and when you do, you forget to complete what was asked of you, which can lead to an even bigger hassle in the future.
- Learn to prioritize. Learn to prioritize, and prioritize correctly. While some tasks may not seem important to you at this point in time, consider first the effects of completing the job. Will it impact business in a specific way? Who will get the immediate benefit from completing the job early? Will it help your operations? Consider these when making your "to do" list for the day, and you will not miss out on a single thing.
- Add variety. There is nothing wrong with adding variety to your daily tasks. In fact, having a bunch of things to do in a day will ensure that you will not only be busy, but you will also accomplish a lot of things in different departments. Each task has its own personal reward. Learn to diversify so that, at the end of the day, you will have accomplished a number of things that benefit you in a number of different ways.
- Eliminate distractions. When going about your day, remove any distractions that may hinder you from completing your task. Ensure that when you are in work mode, you will stay in work mode. Learn to focus on completing the task at hand, and you should have no problem completing it. Too often, things are left undone or are finished half-baked because people get too distracted to give the task all of their focus.
- Balance. Try to live a balanced life. You life cannot be only about work. This kind of thinking could lead to a burnout. Surround yourself with optimistic, cheerful people, who see the brighter side of things. If you are family-oriented, make sure to spend time with them at the end of the day. Get enough sleep and exercise, and eat healthy. Use these as tools for facilitating your mind. Learn to keep work and home lives separate. Do not put one over the other, as doing so will result in you not getting any work done at all or else having work affect your family.
It is said that time is always the thief . But if you can manage your time, and you can work productively, you can make the most out of this ever-dwindling resource.
