You may have spent a large portion of your adult life working, and yet you’re wondering why you haven’t achieved that level of success that you’ve always dreamed of. What’s keeping you from succeeding? Haven’t you worked hard enough that you’ve practically made your career your whole life? Well, the fact of the matter is, though hard work is a vital component for success, it is not the only factor. Consider these other factors that might be keeping you from the success you deserve:
- Having a defeatist attitude. In many cases, attitude is everything. If you keep telling yourself that you are not good enough or that you will never succeed, chances are, you certainly won’t! Remember this: the mind is a very powerful thing. It is able to send signals to your body as to how your body should perform and what it could attain. Start transforming your attitude and be amazed at how your performance would peak as well.
- No clear plan. If you’re not sure what your specific goals are then it’s going to be harder for you to attain them, don’t you think? That’s why it’s important that you set definitions on what success is. You could plan for short-term goals (realistically attainable within one year) and long-term ones. For example, your short-term goal is to be promoted as Junior Manager in your company. Give yourself about an hour to brainstorm on how you can attain this goal. List down your action plan, the people who could help you, the skills you’ll need to hone to be qualified for the position. By having clear-cut plan, you’ll be able to train your eyes on a specific goal, and this will enable you to zero in on the equivalent actions that would get you to this goal. The key here is to concentrate your time and energy according to your plan and avoid being aimless.
- Not motivated enough. Being truly successful is not achieved overnight. You have to expend enough time and efforts toward it. That’s why it would help for you to have good reasons and inspirations to help you realize that all your efforts are worth it. Maybe you like to succeed for your family? Then motivate yourself everyday by posting their pictures throughout your office cubicle. Perhaps you like to earn enough to go to that dream vacation in the Bahamas? Then use a gorgeous sunset picture of the Bahamas as your computer wallpaper. It helps to remember that you’re not aiming for success as an end in itself – you are living for much higher life goals.
- No network. The importance of having a network of people to help you be successful cannot be emphasized enough. By establishing good rapport and contact with people, you would be able to acquire more insider information about your trade, and you will be able to learn from other people’s past mistakes and experiences – you don’t have to commit them yourself! If your contacts were from higher-ups in your company, then they’d probably be able to give you a boost in the corporate ladder – for one, if they know who you are then your efforts would be more noticed as well. That’s why make an effort to socialize, attend those company functions, and be congenial to everybody. Being pleasant helps you go a long, long way.
Being aware of these four obstacles would enable you to combat them. Here’s to more success!
