What is electrical engineering? If you become an electrical engineer what types and kinds of jobs would you be doing? Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that deals with studying and applying electromagnetism, electronics and electricity. Electrical engineers often deal with problems that are associated with motor control and transmission of power in large-scale electrical systems. Electrical engineers have contributed to the creation of the GPS (Global Positioning Network) as well as to the development of electric power generation (electric generators).
Being an engineer does require you to have an education – a college degree in engineering, but most importantly you should have the following characteristics:
- Orientation to detail
- Logical thinking mind
As an engineer there are a lot of opportunities for you out there. You have to be very passionate about it because being an engineer is no easy task. You need to be aware that being an engineer is not going to happen in an easy way. You need to be well versed in the sciences and in mathematics. You have to make sure that the job brings you satisfaction and enjoyment, otherwise you are going to hate it before long. Electrical engineering has so many aspects but you can also specialize in a specific area to narrow down your job and sharpen your skills, or you can also generalize. Below is a list of three electrical engineer careers that are open for successful electrical engineers. These are only a small percentage of a long list of careers that are open for you if you decide to become an electrical engineer.
- Electrical Engineer - The job of an electrical engineer requires you to take charge in designing new and better electronics. You also test equipment and troubleshoot problems. Your project might be working on cars, robots, radar and navigation systems, lighting and wiring in buildings, cell phone systems and other electronically related jobs. You can work in industrial plants, laboratories or offices. You could also be a Quality Assurance personnel in some cases.
- Electrical Design Engineer - You would be mostly interacting with your company's marketing department to develop specifications for new product development projects by taking designs from their conceptual stage to the prototype stage. You will be in touch with your company's R&D department and mostly you will be working on product design and development.
- Electrical Mechanical Engineer - You would be someone who has graduated with a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. You would be someone who possesses both a good and intense knowledge of the electrical and mechanical aspects of equipment, systems, etc.
Engineers can also be project managers, consultants, systems engineers and more. If you plan to be an engineer, it's not going to be easy. Those mentioned above are just a few among a wide range of careers that electrical engineers can have after obtaining necessary education and training and most importantly a great amount of hard work.
