Many people that were once at a high point in their careers have found themselves unemployed or underemployed and are now in the midst of a career transition. This can be a difficult time in one's life, but with the right knowledge, training, and attitude it can be a liberating and joyful event.

Firstly, think about what you want to do with your opportunity for a new career. Now is the time to pursue an area of work that you have always dreamed of doing but did not pursue for one reason or another. There is no time like the present, so do not think that you are too old to pursue your dreams.

  • Once you have decided what career you want to pursue, get educated on the topic. With the enormity of the world wide web there is no reason not to know everything about your career of choice. Learn what sort of education is required, what types of jobs are available, and how to make yourself marketable.

  • Start your networking early. Many people say that getting a job is not about what you know, but rather about who you know. When you are transitioning into a new career, an employee referral can be an asset. Be sure to frequent networking events and create personal business cards to hand out so that you are memorable and your phone number does not get lost on a napkin or scrap paper.

  • Pursue your education with a vengeance. Seek out internships and externships that are available for your field of study to help with gaining practical knowledge and making more professional connections in your new career field. Ensure that you are always sitting in the front of the class, and participate frequently in class with meaningful conversation. You want your professors to know who you are and be able to write you glowing letters of recommendation.

Remember that you are starting a new career and may have to take an entry level position to start off with. Do not let this get you down and ruin your motivation. This is simply a starting point in your new career. There is lots of room for quick growth from this entry level position, but getting a foot in the door is invaluable when transitioning into a new career field. While in your new position, ensure that you are making friends with everyone in order to open up the most doors possible.
