The Office of National Statistics is in charge of collecting a lot of data, and one of them is the collection of the census population. Census data collection varies from country to country, but in the USA, collection of population data happens every ten years. Since they collect data at a ten-year interval, and have the whole country’s census information to gather, they have to be very systematic.

  1. Area designation. Since the Office of National Statistics deals with a large area, each city of each state has a branch of the office that collates data per area. Division per city can still be divided into specific districts, and people in these areas will report the statistical data to be collected and summarized as the city census. Each city census will be collected and will then be reported as the state census. This, in turn, will be collected to become the national census report.
  2. Data involved. Census questionnaires involve the number of people living in the household, employment, income received, culture and other information that the main office has instructed the personnel to gather from their districts. Only trained census personnel can gather data because they are the ones who know what kind of data they are looking for and their significance. Interviewing individuals before a certain deadline needs accuracy and speed to accomplish, so they have to be critical with what they do to get the proper data, or else they’ll repeat the procedure.
  3. Confidentiality. Since this is quite personal information that is gathered about people, the personnel who gather and collate the information are well-trained not to release any individual information no matter what. Census information also has a historical significance, because it can be used by historians to trace a certain family lineage. But historians cannot grab information any time they please, because census data have to be one hundred years old before they can be opened for historians to use.
  4. What you can do. A sample of questions that census people will ask is already uploaded at some sites in pdf format that you can download. You can make their lives easier by reading ahead. Census personnel do their interviews door to door, so you can imagine the hassle if the one being interviewed does not know half of what is being asked. So when you know that census time is near, you can go online and help yourself to find the information you need.

Census information is by no means an easy task to gather. It takes a lot of time and effort to gather, and sometimes not everyone involved is cooperative enough to get the proper data. However it is, it helps people understand the state of the nation and other things that are currently affecting the country. At the same time, one can see the comparison of the present from ten years ago, how things have improved or have stayed the same. With this in mind, the next time those census people come around, remember to be as truthful as you can, because you now know how they use it and how important it is.
