In a global environment where technology is continuously evolving, workers are required to have the right skills and training in technology. Workers may not readily have the resources for such training so their only option is to seek assistance through technology training grants.
- Eligibility. Applicants for technology training grants must first check with the institution or organization for the list of requirements that they have to meet to be eligible. Each institution will have their own criteria and rules for applicants such as being a resident of a certain area, or possess technology certification.
Some programs give grants to staff members who are part of a public or private non-profit organization whose objective for applying is to enhance skills to benefit the organization and the community. Staff members may be required to be employed for a number of years before applying and must show documentation of having sufficient technological skills. Grants that are community based are also given to individuals that are currently unemployed, old workers, or persons with disabilities who wish to join the work force.
- Preparations. Applicants must have prepared all the necessary documents to meet the requirements and submit them to the proper departments. Make sure to read policies and procedures so you know what is required and what to prepare. You may be asked to submit various documents that have to be requested from different departments in your organization or company. Make these requests ahead of time to ensure you meet the application deadline. Contact information is usually provided so applicants can call or email their queries. Look for scheduled forums conducted by representatives of the grant institution. Policies and procedures will be explained and applicants will be able to ask their questions directly.
- Review Process. Your application will be evaluated by a technical review committee or a grants committee. In some cases, a scoring system will be applied to requests for consideration. The committee will consider achievements acquired, past training in technology, commitment and goals. If the grant is applied by a corporation or organization then the committee will evaluate policies, performance and objectives. Once the applicant is deemed qualified then the committee will send a notification of approval.
- Post Requirements. Most often, progress reports are required and the frequency of these reports will depend on the institution that awards the grant. Aside from progress reports, grant recipients are required to furnish financial reports. They must prepare records and documents that reflect costs, whether indirect or direct costs incurred.
Workers will have the ability to advance in their companies or organization by getting further training in technology. Unemployed workers will benefit from the grant by getting technology certification, increasing their chances of getting hired.
