The New York Police Department or NYPD has gained popularity as an elite group of men and women who is in charge of enforcing the law in New York. The standards for this job are high, owing to the fact that New York is one of the largest and busiest cities in the entire United States. To become a detective for the NYPD, you have to be prepared to make a commitment to the NYPD motto, which is “Faithful Unto Death”. You must also pass the exams that will determine your intellect, strength of character, psychological state and physical health.
Here are some of the steps that you should take if you want to become a detective in the NYPD:
- Prepare the requirements for the job. In order to become a detective of the New York police department, you have to prepare all the requirements. First, you must be 21 years of age or older to qualify for this job. You have to make sure that you are no more than 35 years of age during the application process or you will be disqualified. You must be able to provide a driver’s license. You have to make sure that it is an Unrestricted New York State driver’s license. You must also be able to supply a proof that you live within one of the territories of New York, Suffolk, Nassau, Rockland, Westchester, Orange counties or Putnam. You must also provide a high school diploma. You must also have at least 60 hours of class time in college. You must also obtain a 2.0 Grade Point Average or GPA from a college that has accreditation. Two years of U.S, military service also qualifies you for the job although it is only optional.
- Take the pre-hire exams. In order to qualify for the job, you have to pass the medical and psychological tests. You must also pass the Civil Service Exam. You can take the Civil Service Exam online. You can also go to the City Department of Administrative Services or DCAS office. The test is available to everyone and is free. Your next step is to go to the medical division of the NYPD. You will undergo a test that will determine if you health status is fit for the job. If you pass the medical exam, you will go through the character assessment process. There will be instances where you have to take further exams that will test your physical and mental health.
- Take the job test. Your next step will be to take the Job Standard Test or JST in the police academy. The JST offers written instructions and video demonstrations on how the test will commence. This test will require you to pass the physical challenges such as running, climbing, simulation of a crime situation, trigger pulling and the restraint of a suspect. After this test, you have to take the oral psychological test. After passing the psychological exam, you have to prepare documentations to finish your application.
After going through the rigorous application process, you will finally be sworn in as a NYPD detective. You have to spend six months on a training session before you can start as a detective.
