How To Become a Distribution Manager

A distribution manager is a key member of any business team.  The distribution manager is responsible for procuring and distributing products and materials that are essential to business operations.  Becoming a distribution manager requires learning a number of skills.

The distribution manager is a stickler for details.  He or she schedules deliveries and receipts.  He or she reviews invoices, work orders, and reports to make sure products and materials are being handled according to plan.  The distribution manager keeps an up-to-date inventory to make sure that all products and materials are accounted for.

The distribution manager is a good supervisor.  He or she directs the activities of the warehouse staff and make sure that all personnel are doing their jobs correctly.  The distribution manager is also responsible for hiring and training the staff.  This means understanding every aspect of how the warehouse operates, and also having good people skills.  A good distribution manager is a hands-on supervisor.

Safety is a concern in any warehouse.  The distribution manager is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment.  He or she plans and develops safety programs and makes sure that there is compliance with all safety laws.  He or she makes sure that all personnel are trained in the correct use of transport vehicles and other equipment.

The distribution manager also makes sure that all the equipment used in the warehouse is well-maintained and operates safely.  He or she schedules regular maintenance on all equipment and immediately addresses any problems that arise.

The distribution manager coordinates warehouse activities with the other departments. He or she keeps purchasing informed of materials needed.  He or she makes sure that the production department has materials in a timely manner so it can keep running.  He or she keeps the sales department advised of how many finished products are available for sales.

To become a distribution manager, a person needs a BS in distribution management, business, economics, or accounting.  Schools that offer degrees in distribution management include Michigan State, Brigham Young, University of North Texas, and University of Illinois. Computer courses are also required, especially in distribution management software.

A good candidate for distribution manager will have several years experience in inventory or warehouse supervision.  A good plan is to begin working in a warehouse while in college, and gain experience through the years.  Distribution managers are often hired from within.
