How To Become a Fantasy Sports Writer

More and more people are getting interested in fantasy sports. Sports fanatics play at least one fantasy sport, be it basketball, football, baseball or hockey. With all the attention it gets, there is no doubt fantasy sports writers are in high demand these days. If you are interested in becoming a fantasy sports writer, you should start as a real sports writer. It would also be a plus factor if you have a track record of fantasy analysis or if you have actual participation in the sport you are writing about whether as a player or coach. Here are more tips on how you can become a fantasy sports writer.

  • Be flexible as a writer. Know as much as possible about team sports particularly the four major team sports in the United States.  As previously mentioned, these are basketball, baseball, football and hockey.  You cannot be expert in basketball but knew nothing about baseball. You should also be familiar with all the major players in these team sports.
  • Be knowledgeable about fantasy sports. If you want to start a career as a fantasy sports writer, you should be able to know the difference between real sports and fantasy sports. Take note that in fantasy sports, stats matter the most and not what transpires on the court or field or ice. The top best players in any given sport will not be the best fantasy players or point-earners in that same sport. Do not focus too much on the dimension of the game but on the statistics, trends and match-ups.
  • Be willing to research player data and learn to analyze statistics and trends.
  • Be innovative, creative and original. Express your personal opinion. Never steal an idea from a fellow sports writer. If possible, you should be giving opinion or advice that no one has ever written about. Always study your material and present your idea to your readers the best way you can.
  • Develop your own writing style. Assess if you are good at using analogies. Or if you write best in a professional and instructive manner. If you think you have a good sense of humor then you can sometimes be funny in your articles.
  • Start a blog. You can practice writing about fantasy sports in your own blog. Or you can ask your family and friends to read your articles and tell them honestly what they think about them.
  • Search the web for fantasy sports sites and forum. Participate in the discussion by answering posts asking for advice. This will give you a chance to showcase your talent as a writer.
  • Contact the Editor In Chief or any of the editorial staff of the websites where you usually participate or where you are posting at. Ask if they are looking for a sports writer. You can present to them your qualifications and sample works. Let them know how serious you are in becoming a fantasy sports writer.
