How To Choose Careers in Meteorology

When you see a weather forecaster, you probably think that it is such an easy job. He must have gotten that position without much effort. Think again, most weather forecasters are meteorologists. Meteorology is not as easy as ABC. This requires a keen interest in science and applications to understand the workings of the atmosphere. To be successful in this career, you have to focus and train yourself early.

A career in Meteorology can be started by getting training in computer and atmospheric sciences. You need to get a bachelor’s degree, better yet a Master's degree in meteorology courses. It is vital that you get the most information on physics, engineering, chemistry, and ecology. There are a few careers one can go into depending on what you are most interested in.

• Be a weather forecaster – To do a weather forecast on national television takes a good deal of patience, firstly because you need to land the job. The competition is fierce because mostly, everyone wants to be that most famous weather reporter on the morning news. It also takes luck to find a position in a major network.
• Work in the government – The US government employs most of the meteorologists in the country. Government agencies who deal with atmospheric degrees, oceanography, atmospheric radars, etc. have a need for people who graduated with meteorology courses. Some of these include the National Weather Service, Air Force, and NASA to name a few. You need to have diligence, loyalty and discipline to work in this sector.
• Be a professor – Major universities employ meteorologists to teach and do research on different atmosphere platforms and breakthroughs. Sometimes these findings benefit the government as well. You need to have the forbearance of a good disciplinarian and an educator. You may be asked to write articles with regard to the research.
• Be a researcher – You can work for different private sectors that fund research programs for this career. The pay and benefits are usually above average, for it’s backed by major companies and sometimes philanthropists. You will study weather patterns, weather satellites and effects of the same on the surroundings. You will collate data for your own company and other collaborating agencies or companies.

A career like this can test your patience. It could mean staying behind after your shift, working everyday of the week and even on holidays. There could be emergencies wherein you cannot say no in coming in to work. Mostly there are deadlines you need to work on by yourself or even onboard doing research in an isolated place or an aircraft.
