Contrary to what many civilians believe that once you become a soldier or an enlisted man, you will just be saluting all the higher ranks you come across, loving your firearms as your wife, and shining your combat boots for the rest of your life. But no, the military is more than that. It caters to other professional careers for the soldier during and after service.
- Acceptance into the three major services. After you have passed the application as military enlisted personnel, you will be accepted in one of the three major services of the armed forces, namely, the Army, Air Force, and the Navy. Those major services are generally the same in other armed forces of the world, be it in the US, or in China. The basic requirements in applying as an enlisted man are a high school diploma or its equivalent (though some armies prefer applicants who have taken some courses in college), there is an age factor, and of course no physical disabilities. Though there are similar requirements, the enlistment process and system in the military may vary depending on which major services you will want to apply.
- Administrative jobs. If you are clinging to an administrative job as a career, you can probably get that once enlisted. Under the Enlisted Occupational Specialty groups, administrative careers are included. Of course, the military keeps accurate planning information in managing its tactical maneuver and operations that's why it needs men in the office or administrative personnel. They document information, make reports, preserve files, and reassess information to support military officers. You can still choose which specialized area interests you whether it's finance, or legal affairs, or supply, or transportation.
- Specialized combat. Another specialty occupation in the military is the Combat Specialty Occupations. It includes field expertise like the infantry, scout rangers, Special Forces, and the artillery. If you choose this occupation you will be operating weapons or carrying out particular combat missions. If you are the Rambo type of guy, this is the enlisted job that suits you. You will be trained to be an expert in some particular sort of weapon structure or combat procedure to tear down the adversary. You will be able to drive tanks and amphibious assault vehicles in warfare or scouting missions.
- Engineering, architecture and construction. If you dream of being an engineer or an architect or a mason, you can also do that while being enlisted. There is a Construction Specialty Occupations in the military that specializes in the construction or repair of buildings, bridges, dams, airfields, bunkers, and the plumbing, water and electrical requirement of these constructions. They also work with bulldozers, cranes, graders, and other huge equipment. They apply their special skills in the military bases, as well as, civilian structures.
- Information technology. You can also find an enlisted job in the military in the area of information technology, space operations, environmental health and safety, and intelligence. Engineering Science and technical personnel require precise familiarity and skills to manage technical equipment, and decipher complex problems.
- Medical and para-medical. Health care personnel assistant and medical professionals are noble jobs you can also find in the military. You will be in close contact with doctors, nurses, dentists, and physical therapists. You can be part of the specialized team in emergency medical treatment, laboratory testing of tissue and blood samples, the operation of x-ray and ultrasound equipment, accounting pharmacy supplies or patients' records, constructing and repairing eyeglasses or dental equipment, and many other medical tasks.
There are really lots of enlisted jobs in the military that you will find interesting amid the hardship of physical trainings. Beyond basic training there are other instructions that can prepare an enlisted individual to accomplish certain specialty occupations.
