It is easy to look for a summer camp job. You can just type that in your search engine and hit search. This will return plentiful results, but the best one would be the American Camping Association (ACA). When you get to their site, you can ask them to send you a free copy of their Summer Camp Employment Booklet – which supplies a list of camps all over America. Though due to its popularity, you would have to apply earlier so that you would have better chances in bagging the job that you want.

First, make sure that you really want to work with kids, because summer camps are usually for kids. Another thing to consider is the certainty that you can be away from the comforts of your house and neighborhood, because you would have to stay at a sleep-away camp. Note that this will not be just overnight but will be for the whole summer. The last but also a very important thing to consider is your love for the outdoors. If you are not that type of person, then a camp job, which could include hours of hiking, camping in the woods, in close contact with dust, dirt, trees, horses and other animals, etc – could become a nightmare for you. Though if you’re the indoor type of person and you want to try something new, be sure that you will not quit in the middle of your employment, because lots of kids and your camp director are expecting a lot from you.

To make your online summer camp job search more specific, it would be best to determine what kind of camp you want to apply for. If you think that you cannot sleep in bunks in a dusty cabin, then you can opt to look for a position in a Day Camp. But if you would like to stay within the campsite – a part of your pay goes to your board – then you can be employed for the Resident Camp. Another thing to check during your online search would be the match of your principles and the camp’s core values. Are you comfortable to be under a competitive type of specialty camp? Or are you better off with a non-competitive and traditional recreational camp?

When you have finally decided that you really want to work a summer camp job and you have chosen the kind of camp that you want to work in, make sure to ask your friends (those who have worked in the camp you have chosen) about the camp’s real story like the type of summer activities they give for kids, themes, type of activities you have to handle, pay, etc.

A summer job like this can be very demanding physically and mentally. You could opt to get other jobs like bartending for a coffee shop, be a waitress in a restaurant, etc. and not be as stressed and tired as you would be as staff for a camp. But if you have a job as cool as a camp counselor, it would give you a chance to exercise your team leadership, time management and most especially handling responsibility. You will become more in touch with the environment, and you will develop your social skills and patience because you would have to deal with little kids in the camp. It would be cool to get all sun-kissed with all the hiking you’ve done all summer and influence the lives of the campers you handle over the summer camp season.
