How To Form a Band and Book Gigs

If having your own band and playing to an adoring crowd is your dream, you have to believe that it can happen. It takes an incredible amount of talent, a lot of hard work and perseverance to become a success. If you and your friends and musically inclined and would like to form a bad and book gigs, there are several things you need to do first.

If you think you have what it takes to make it big in the music industry, read on!

  • Get the band together. It’s best if you already know each other so you know each other’s personalities. To have a band, you need a lead vocal, a drummer, lead guitar and a bassist. You can have more band members as needed, such as someone on keyboard or a back up vocalist. It is up to you. Keep in mind that the more band members there are the more likely there will be problems. Too many personalities who all want to be stars can be a recipe for disaster.
  • Rehearse till the neighbors complain. The only way you’re going to get good is if you consistently practice. Give your band a name and determine what kind of music you want to play. Do you want to be a rock band, or play heavy metal music? Do you want to play more contemporary popular songs so you can get gigs at weddings? Are you into alternative music? Don’t play what sells but stay to your artistic passion and make music that you love.
  • Make a demo. Record yourselves singing and playing together. You need several copies of your demo to pass around to people who can get your foot in the door. You may spend the money and record your music in a real recoding studio so you’ll all sound better. It’s your choice if you want to do original compositions or if you want to record a classic. For a demo, you may want to do both. Make sure the music in your demo clearly shows the type of music you play and how you want the public to perceive you. Pass this demo tape to disk jockeys at radio stations.
  • Play for free. While you’re not getting any paid gigs, get out there and let other people hear you. Play at weddings, parties and other events even if you only get a thank you in the end. You never know who’s listening to you.
  • Get an agent. If you’re serious about going pro, you need to work with an industry agent who can get your gigs for you. Agents work on commission so they will want you to succeed.

Be patient and you’ll soon see your hard work pay off. If you have the talent, you’re unique, marketable and you have the sound people are looking for, you can make it! If you never get to play professionally, you can still have your band to play simply to enjoy making music.
