Socializing with friends and family almost always involves alcoholic beverages so the position of bartender is a very promising spot for those who want to be in the middle of a throbbing and exciting party atmosphere.
- Understand drinks and cocktails. You will not be getting many calls for jobs if you don’t know much about your craft. Being a bartender requires a strong understanding of the tried and tested drinks that people usually order in bars. Run of the mill drinks such as tequila sunrise, screwdriver, black Russian and the like should be a good start. Fancy drinks like margarita and daiquiris should also help you grow your drinks vocabulary.
- Be familiar with your flavors. Just like a cook who conceptualizes his own recipes and dishes, a bartender has to be familiar with the various tastes, spices, flavors and of course, liquors that are used in the craft. Tasting these individual components makes you a better judge of which drinks and ingredients go together and how each flavor influence and heighten the experience.
- Study and train. There are institutions that offer advanced bartending training, so if you really want to be one of the top dogs in the industry, you would probably want to consider enrolling under these bartending schools. Aside from also improving your know-how on making drinks, you will also earn valuable showmanship skills that would set you apart from the also-ran bartenders.
Schools also handle job placements most of the time. Be clear on where you want to be assigned if ever. Bartenders can take their wares anywhere – from the corner pub to a luxury liner that travels the seas for months at a time.
- Look for openings. If that option doesn’t work out for you, you may search online or in classified ads for possible job opportunities for you. If you’re going to apply for these positions, you’re going to do yourself a favor by furnishing prospective employers with a well-written resume that highlights your strengths and other relevant skills. Posting these on forums and websites that employers frequent also increases your chances of getting hired.
- Be sociable. When asked to appear for an interview and demonstration, dress smartly and don’t forget to let your personality shine. Bartenders need to be really extroverted to truly connect to the customers. You can impress your potential employer by showing your broad range of drinks mixing skills and your attention to detail. Making sure that your equipment such as shakers and glasses at spic and span would be one of the best ways to show that you’re really a professional in what you wish to do.
Don’t forget to socialize and smile at your customers. Bartending is heavily dependent on rapport with your clients so do try to establish a congenial connection.
