Choosing your financial advisor (FA) is a very important decision that you'll need to take some time with in order to do properly. The effects of a poor choice could be devastating. Here are some questions you should ask yourself before diving in.

You first want to take your time when discussing your finances. Is the FA you're talking with willing to do the same? If not, then he isn't the right one for you. You should have the freedom to sit down and discuss things on several occasions; at least two meetings should be had with this person before you make a final decision on who you will hire.

Is the FA looking out for you or for his own interests? You can tell. You need someone who works for you, not someone who just wants in your accounts. If you are just starting out and have little to invest or work with, you should, without a doubt, still be treated like gold. You want an FA that truly cares about your financial health and isn't always looking for the next commission.

Does he work for a trusted firm with a good track record?  He should. Choose a solid firm to work for you. Even if the FA is new to the industry, if he works for a trusted investment firm, this is a good sign. You need to be able to trust the firm as well as your financial advisor.

Are the investments that he uses use new or proven? You don't need something new unless you have solid information that reveals it to be a good investment. Does he use high quality investments with solid track records that also have good returns over the long haul? Long term is the key. A financial advisor is helping you invest and get on track with your finances, not play with your money and gamble in the short term.

And finally, remember that he will be advising you on financial decisions, not making the decisions. If he insists that it's his way or no way, tell him to get lost. You make the decisions. On the other side of the coin, though, you should trust his judgment, and should accept his advice more often than not; if you don't trust his judgement then you should look for another FA.

Your finances are important; don't ever invest in an investment or work with a financial advisor who you don't trust or feel right about. Of all the financial choices you'll make through the years, the decision on who helps you with it all could be the biggest one of all, so choose well!
