One of the greatest challenges employers face with training their employees is keeping them motivated and focused throughout the training process.  Training can be a rather cumbersome activity but when the job calls for specific skills that employees need to perform their jobs well, it is essential that they pay attention.  There are methods and techniques to keep employees focused during training that are easy to implement.

One thing to remember in keeping your employees focused during training is to get them involved in the process. Have activities planned that will require the employees to use their teamwork and communication skills in learning the new material.  Encourage them to ask questions during the learning process.  It could be a group project that will allow hands on training in learning a new skill for their jobs or, it could be in the form of brainstorming with a group and planning ways to use the new material they are learning.

Do have a visual representation of the learning material.  It could be in the form of a PowerPoint presentation along with handouts that the employees can use to follow along.  Make sure that the presentation is lively or animated.  Also, make sure to let the employees know that after a segment of training they will be tested on their knowledge.  This will give them the incentive to stay focused and pay closer attention to the material.

Another method to keep employees focused through training is to have snacks and beverages like coffee and donuts that will provide energy as well as incentive to stay focused.  Do give the employees short breaks during training as this will allow them to relax for a moment and regroup.  Short breaks are a tool that will help to keep employees focused because it is difficult to stay focused for long periods of time without a break.

Another factor to take into consideration in keeping your employees focused through training is the temperature of the room you are training in.  If it is too warm it may make your employees sleepy and unable to focus.  Try, if you can, to regulate the temperature so that it is slightly cool in the room but not unbearably cold.  A cooler environment tends to be more invigorating and helps to keep people focused on their goals.

One final point to keep in mind when trying to keep your employees focused through training is the tone of your voice.  Voice is a powerful motivator and can either lulled people to sleep or keep them active and excited to hear more.  Use your tone of voice to excite and motivate your employees.  Vary the tone of your voice when discussing certain points during training.   These keys will help in the training process.
