The need to learn about the food stamp program offered by your state may come from the loss of employment or a change in the family's economical situation. The food stamp program was setup to help people who were having a hard time affording to feed their families during economic hardships. This program is sponsored by the Department of Agriculture.
The first step is to contact the Department of Public Aide, also known as the Department of Health and Human Resources in some parts of the country. There are offices located in most major cities and in small towns across the nation. A person can find the telephone number in their local yellow pages under the government section of the telephone book.
Next call for an appointment. The department that handles the food stamp program usually ask the applicant to make an appointment and the will supply the person with a list of documents needed to present at the time of application.
The employee at the office where the person applies for the Food Stamp Program will supply the applicant with the guidelines for income eligibility according to the amount of people residing with the applicant. There are income restrictions which may make the applicant ineligible, such as a family making too much money compared to how many people live in the household.
By looking the information up on the Internet under their state's Food Stamp Program, a person can see if they are eligible before applying.
The food stamp program includes all edible foods and beverages plus water and ice. Items excluded from the list of products include alcohol, medicines, pet food, toiletries and new power drinks available on the market.
Sales tax is not included when a person uses their Food Stamp card in stores. The benefits are usually put on a debit type card and can be used at any location that sells food and drink items. The recipient will enter a PIN (Personal Identification Number) number into a keypad to complete the transaction. Each time the card is used, the person will be given a receipt with the remaining balance printed on it. This affords the recipient the knowledge of how much they still have to spend on groceries.
Periodically a recipient will need to reapply for the Food Stamp Program to keep the agency updated as to their financial situation. Should the recipient have a change in their situation such as gaining employment or receiving extra income from employment, then the recipient has a set amount of time to contact the agency to determine their eligibility to continue on the Food Stamp Program. By not complying with this rule the person may be responsible for the repayment of benefits.
