One of the hardest things to do is to leave the office behind during a vacation. Your vacation should be a time to unwind, to relax, and to do things that you enjoy to do. If you spend your time worrying and thinking about work you will be tense and will end up not having a good time. This is not an easy thing to accomplish.

If you are a workaholic and cannot leave work behind then see if you can book a vacation to a destination where you cannot access the Internet and has limited cell phone signals. Cruises are great for this. It is not that you did not want to check your email or work on that project, it's that you could not get online or check your phone or email messages. Some tropical islands also would work well since not every property has Internet connections available. Of course, you can also leave your laptop, PDA, and Blackberry at home. This way you will not be tempted to access them while you are away on your vacation.

If you do go on your vacation with your blackberry or PDA then try to discipline yourself to only check it at specific times during the day. This way your family and friends will not get upset with you for always working when you should be out having fun.  No one wants to be on vacation with someone always checking their blackberry for new messages and emails. It can cause more fights and tension than you care to have.

Some people have to learn to relax and unwind. It is hard for them to let their guard down. A good way for these people to relax is to start with a warm, invigorating massage on your first day of your vacation. Don't pack the business suits because you will not need them. Pack fun, casual vacation wear like shorts, T-shirts, and bathing suits. Get yourself in the vacation mindset by laying on a beach while enjoying your favorite tropical beverage.

If you are on your vacation in Europe, for example, then try to plan your days full of activities. There is so much to do and see in each European city. When you are walking through museums or Climbing the Eiffel Tower you will forget all about the office you left behind. The same applies to adventure and sport vacations.

Remember, if you do go on vacation with other people from your job then the conversation will almost always turn back to work issues and problems. The rest of your family will soon grow tired of hearing about work and people they are not familiar with. Do your family a favor and leave the office behind during your next vacation.
