A commute to work is something that most of us can't escape from. Traffic is part of our life and there is nothing you can do to change that. The sooner you learn to accept this fact, the sooner you will be free from stress caused by traffic. Here are few things you can try for a more peaceful or even enjoyable commute.
Leave early. Waking up early and going to work earlier than most people will instantly solve your commute problem. You will spend less time traveling and have more time to do actual work. If you are early enough, you can eat breakfast or have your morning rituals once you arrive at the office. This will give you time to relax and prepare yourself for a whole day of work.
Find alternate routes. Familiarize yourself with the area and try to find different routes that you can take when going to work. This will be useful when there are accidents in certain areas that can cause traffic back-ups. If you know an alternate route, you can avoid the congested roads and get to work faster.
Remain calm. If you are already stuck in traffic, remember to keep your composure. Always keep in mind that you cannot do anything about it. No matter how pissed you are or how loud you scream inside your car, the traffic will not improve for you. Take into consideration that there are other people who are stuck in traffic with you. Their time can be as important as yours and there is no reason to blame them for the situation. Also obey traffic rules at all times.
Find a buddy. Long commutes may seem short if you have someone to talk to along the way. If you have a friend/officemate that lives near your area and has the same office or an office near you, you can go to work with him or her so you'll have someone to converse with if you get stuck in traffic. Having good conversations with a friend will also give you something to look forward to instead of looking at your commute to work as a hassle. Avoid getting too engrossed in the conversations though; the last thing you want to happen early in the morning is get into an accident.
Listen to music. - Play your favorite music while going to work. Calm and soothing music will help you relax and relieve you from stress, while a more up-tempo type of music can keep you awake if you are sleepy. Never play the music too loud and make sure that you pay attention to the road while driving.
There are other things that you can try to minimize stress when commuting to the office. Just remember your main goal, which is to get to work safely and hopefully on time. Always be mindful of pedestrians and other cars. Getting into an accident will not only delay you further but will also cost you a fortune and sometimes it could even take your life or the lives of others.
