In one of his songs, David Gates can’t find the words to say goodbye. It is mainly because he does not want to hurt the feelings of the other person. It may also be that he does not know how to say goodbye in a proper way. Here are some suggestions:
- How to say goodbye at work. Saying goodbye after resigning from work will not be difficult if the reason for leaving is a better job. Of course it is still good practice to say goodbye to everyone, including your boss. Share with your co-workers your experiences while working with them and don’t forget to thank your boss for the opportunity. Farewell emails to say goodbye may be sent, but personally saying it is better.
- Leave an open line of communication. Your departure should be handled as carefully as you would handle any business enterprise. Leave an open line of communication because you never know when you will need someone's assistance in the future. Goodbye letters are personal letters and your feelings count. Avoid being emotional unless there is something in the past that has not been forgotten. Simple goodbye letters will be sufficient.
- K.I.S.S. when saying goodbye. K.I.S.S. or Keep It Short and Simple, is a common sales term used by salesmen and businessmen at the negotiating table. This method is also best to use when departing—make it brief and straight to the point. It should be a short and sweet goodbye. Avoid bragging in your farewell letter. Your criticisms and other frustrations should not be mentioned. Say farewell the sweetest way possible.
- Say it positively. In saying goodbye, be sensitive of feelings of the people you are leaving. Positive goodbyes are coupled with positive words so that the person being left will not feel the pain. If you had misunderstanding in the past, forget it. Instead say positive words to be remembered.
- Don’t forget to remember. Leaving does not mean forgetting. It is simply a part of your journey of advancing as a person. It is normal for someone who wants to grow as a person to leave something or somebody. But that does not mean forgetting the experience of the past, especially if it is both enjoyed by the departing and the departed. After saying goodbye, whatever the circumstances, it is best to still communicate with others. Don’t forget to remember them and tell them how much you have grown as a person, how much you have moved forward and how much you miss the unforgettable moments shared with them in the past. This way, both parties will part, but never remain unconnected.
How to say “goodbye” is an art, which has to be learned. They are called “good” byes because they are positive in nature. Goodbyes will always be remembered if they are positive in manner. Many people stay connected because of the proper and kind way of saying goodbye. Don't be someone who burns valuable bridges because of your improper way of saying goodbye.
