How To Teach at an International School

There are some things to consider if you want to teach at an international school.

First you have to have the qualifications that they are looking for. This simply starts with a lot of schooling and certification. Some schools require at least a bachelor’s degree, but even a Masters is preferred.  You have to have at least a few years of teaching under your belt to get started.  After you have this, then you can get started with your journey.

Thinking about your job description is very important. You have to decide if you want to be long term, short, or volunteer. Once you have decided on your route, start looking for some jobs that are in your range of teaching. You go to a site called the International Schools Services; this site will help you find what you are searching for, especially if you don’t know what region or school you would like to work in. Basically what this site does is hold fairs around the world for people just like you who want to work internationally.  This is a great opportunity to get a lot of information on specific schools and regions overseas.

Once you have found that dream job, there are many organizations that will help you continue your education or your position.  The European Council holds many meetings and conferences that offer certificates in international teaching and Masters degree programs.  There are also similar organizations in Europe that do the same events, even the ones outside of the European areas.  These organizations are great, and they will help you every step of the way if you really have a passion to teach in an international school.

One more thing that you have to consider is your language.  I know overseas there are many different languages that have to be taught or you might need to know, so it is better for you to learn their language just in case all of your students do not speak your native language. The way you can do this is when you go to school, enroll in a language class that you are trying to teach, or just go online and make your selection there.

Teaching at an international school can be challenging, but also very rewarding. This particular job will be a challenge for you at times, especially when you really don’t know where you want to go and how you really want to go about doing it. International school teaching brings a lot of joy to ones that really want to do it.  All it takes is luck and a lot of hard work.  This can be a great opportunity and very fun. You don’t have to make it harder than it has to be.
