Finding a new job can be a challenging and stressful transition. No matter your reasons for deciding to leave your current employer, there are some basic guidelines of which every job seeker should be aware.
- Polish your resume: Especially if it's been a long time since you tried to find a job, you need to spruce up your resume as a first step to finding new employment. Hopefully you still have a few copies of your resume on hand from your last job search, in which case it will simply need to be updated with your current information. If you don't still have an old copy, it's time to start from scratch. And remember when you're trying to find a job, both accuracy and honesty count.
- Write a fantastic cover letter: This isn't something you'll do just once, but rather several times, as you're finding a job. Each letter will be individually focused to the job for which you're applying. Sound like a lot of work? It is, but since your cover letter can be the deciding factor in whether or not you get chosen for an interview, it's worth the trouble. Seek the help of a professional or a guide book if necessary. Either way, a cover letter is a necessary part of finding a job. The cover letter sells you and it should do so with truth, accuracy, and enthusiasm.
- Don't rely on one mode of job hunting: Finding a job these days doesn't just mean searching the classified ads in the newspaper. This still works, but in today's technology savvy market, the Internet is also an effective way to find a job in the local market, or somewhere else if you're willing to relocate. Some websites are industry-specific, while others display ads for an amazing variety of job types. Also don't overlook using an employment agency. Oftentimes it is the employer, and not the job seeker, who pays the fees for this service after you find a job.
- Network! When you're trying to find a job, rely on your entire social and professional network of friends and acquaintances. They can help you find a job you might never have known existed otherwise.
- Be persistent: Finding a job requires tenacity. Even when you feel discouraged, don't throw in the towel. A job hunt may be exhausting, but it can also lead you to a rewarding career that is fulfilling and pays well.
