How To Understand Metrology

Measuring instruments have to be precise and accurate. This is why metrology is very important. In definition, it is the scientific study of measurements. Equipment for measuring objects comes in many forms - whether to measure solids, liquids or gases,  there’s always a measuring tool available. The word metrology comes from the Greek word “metron” which means to measure. The study of measurement has come a long way. It started in the 1950s when companies all over the world agreed that there should be a universal system to which their goods could be calibrated. The birth of the International Organization of Legal Metrology consequently began in 1955. More and more countries have joined this prestigious organization. Thanks to this organization, people all over the world have a unified system of measurement.

There are many advantages in having a unified system. Metrology creates healthy competition among businesses. Since their products can only be measured with one device, businessmen have to create products, which are better and more affordable than what the rival company sells. A unified system also lowers the maintenance costs mainly because the product bears the standard seal of the organization. From the older dial indicators, modern technology has introduced more efficient digital calipers. Even cyberspace has become a part of the standard measurement system. Electromagnetic metrology members focus on creating standard devices to calculate amounts of radio waves, radioactivity, fiber optics and so much more. Laser instruments are now being used to test these conditions. Without metrological services, there would lots of confusion and bickering within countries. Corporations would not be able to precisely measure and consumers would be at the losing end of the bargain.

Many jobs have prospered because of metrology. The science of chemistry has most profited by metrology. Now, chemists can regulate quality control for so many products. It has also helped the environment tremendously. Contaminants can now be properly measured and regulated. Reverse engineering has made it possible to dismantle an object in order to duplicate it. The technology is now used to create computer software and hardware. Training for metrology starts at university. MS in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Metrology and Precision Engineering is the preferable course to enroll in. There are also other jobs, which only require an Associate degree or a Technical certification.

An electronic metrology technician is responsible for performing routine and complex calibration work. To be an electronic metrology technician, you have to have technical certification with at least 2 years of experience. Meanwhile, a metrology engineer requires an MS in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Metrology and Precision Engineering.

Metrologists are always looking for opportunities in research and development. Things are always changing. Due to its accurate nature, everything has to be foolproof. Many lives will be affected by incorrect measurements. Thus, accuracy can help save lives, money and time most especially. People rely on accurate measurements to ease their daily way of life from making coffee, to controlling their cooling/heating systems and preparing food.
