Internet and mobile communications have made some things ubiquitous in the modern world.  In any country, developed or developing, one can see hordes of people hooked to the information bandwagon, accessing people on mobile phones or working on notebooks and laptop computers.  Now, have you ever noticed how very few laptop computers look gleaming clean, especially those that are returning from a road trip or even from an out of country visit to some Asian or African locations?

Well, it is in the interest of a long life of the personal laptop computer as also the health of its user that laptop computers including their screens must be cleaned regularly and well maintained.  Dust and lint on the screen could cause allergies and trigger the common cold, flu and other diseases, not to mention, affecting the vision of the person using it for long hours.

One will be surprised just how easy it is to clean a laptop screen.  While special products are recommended, they are not mandatory.  One needs to know what goes into the making of a laptop screen, the materials used, and the electric current usage in it.  This will then help one decide on using the right day-to-day household products when regularly cleaning the laptop screen.  Read further to learn about cleaning a laptop screen with household products.

  1. First and foremost, read your computer manual for do's and don'ts when cleaning computer screens.  Normally, one is advised against using excessive liquids to clean since the liquid may enter the computer insides and cause a short-circuit or worse, spoil the circuit boards, rendering them useless.  One should make sure to use a static-free cloth as well.
  2. LCD screens, which are included in most computers these days, save on electricity usage and thereby have a longer battery life should not be cleaned with alcoholic substances.  So, check to see if your cleaning liquid has an alcohol content; if yes, then do not use it. This applies to ammonia and strong solvents as well.
  3. If your laptop screen is just dusty and not caked with dirt, then it is best advised to use a soft felt cloth and gently wipe the dry dust off it. Using a static free cloth, remove the finer specks and cloth residue to render a shiny clean screen.
  4. If the screen requires a more sustained effort due to accumulated dirt and difficult to remove spots, it is advisable that you use some clean tap water, filtered water or even better some distilled water [this goes into car and inverter batteries].  Add colorless white vinegar to it; one can add a few drops of lemon juice instead, preferably not both.  Take a fine spray bottle and fill it with the distilled water and equal portions of the white vinegar.  From a small distance and away from the keyboards and other exposed parts of your computer, spray the screen lightly.  Immediately, wipe the sprayed parts with a soft felt cloth to clean the accumulated dirt.

Cover exposed parts and the keyboard with cloth prior to spraying it.  Lastly, wipe the outsides of your entire computer clean with an anti-static cloth and voila you have a sparkling clean screen on your laptop computer.
