Flickr is an image and video hosting website that offers both free and fee-based web services. It was created by Ludicorp and then was bought by Yahoo!. It is now a thriving online community and is said to currently host around four billion images. Perhaps one of the features that support its continuing growth is ‘The Gift of Flickr'. This enables members to purchase a Flickr Pro account for someone else. If you received a Flickr Pro Account from a friend or a loved one, here are the things that you will need to know in order to activate the account.
- Understand the difference of a Flickr Pro account from a Flickr Free account. A Flickr Pro account provides far more benefits than a Flickr Free account. Pro users get unlimited photo uploads (20 MB per photo) and unlimited video uploads (maximum of 90 seconds, 500 MB per video). Much better than the 100 MB photo upload limit per month (10 MB per photo) and 2 video uploads per month (maximum of 90 seconds, 150 MB per video) provided to Free account users. Pro users get unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth and archiving compared to 200 most recent images in the Photostream view of Free users. Photos and videos can be posted in up to 60 group pools for Pro users but only 10 group pools for Free users. Other Pro perks include ad-free browsing and sharing, and view of their count and referrer statistics.
- Be aware that a Yahoo account needs to be associated with the Flickr Pro account. Since Flickr is now owned by Yahoo you will need a Yahoo ID to be associated with the Flickr Pro account. Go to Yahoo's home page and register. This process is free and can be quickly completed. Afterwards you can navigate back to Flickr and activate the Pro Gift. Take note that if you already have Yahoo mail, then you can use that email's address and password to access the Flickr website.
- Activate the Gift Code of your Flickr Pro Gift. Go to Flickr's website and sign in using your Yahoo ID and password. If you don't have an account yet, click on the ‘Sign Up' link and type in all the required information in order to create a new account. Once you are signed in, access the gift activation page. Enter the gift code indicated in the email or gift card that was sent to you. Click on the ‘Terms&Conditions' link and read it carefully. Go back to the activation page, put a check mark on the box that states ‘I acknowledge that I have read, understand and agree to the surprisingly short Flickr Gift Terms & Conditions' and click on ‘Go'.
Once the Flickr Pro Gift is activated, you can now proceed with uploading and sharing all of your photos and videos to your account. But before busying yourself with this task, don't forget to thank the person who gave you the Flickr Pro account as a gift.
