FrontPage is an HTML editor that is used by many people to design and publish webpages. This application is included in the Office 1997 until 2003 suite of productivity applications. It was discontinued and replaced by Expression Web and Sharepoint Designer. Like any other HTML editor, FrontPage allows you to input Web components on the page you are designing. Web components typically used by people are the following: hover button, marquee, spreadsheets, charts and banner ad manager. It also allows the insertion of hit counters to your Web page. Hit counters, commonly referred to as Web counters, is a Web component that shows the number of visitors a page receives. They automatically log the number of visits on a page whenever a Web browser pulls up that specific URL address. The following are steps on how to add a counter to a Web page using Microsoft FrontPage.
- Create a webpage or pull up an existing one. If you have a page ready, simply pull it up inside FrontPage by doing the following steps.
- Launch FrontPage.
- Press "File" and then select "Open" or conversely, you can simultaneously press on "Ctrl" and "O".
- The "Open File" dialogue box will populate your screen which is what you will use to locate the file you need to open.
- Highlight the file and hit "Open".
If you still do not have a page to work on, simply pull up Microsoft FrontPage and start a new project. As with most Office program interfaces, the New option is under the File menu. When you have inserted all the Web elements and content the page needs, you can proceed to the next step.
- Place the eyebeam cursor on the area where you want to insert the hit counter. Like any other WYSWYG (What You See is What You Get) editor, you need to place the cursor on the area where you want the item to show up.
- Ensure that you are on "Page" view by hitting the "Page" button in the "Views Bar" which is located on the left most corner of the FrontPage workspace. If Views Bar is not shown, simply hit "View" from the File menu and select "Page"
- Once viewing the document in "Page" view, hit the "Normal" button which you will see on the lowest part of FrontPage's workspace.
- Browse through the page and using your mouse pointer, click the area where you want the hit counter to be situated.
- Insert the Hit Counter Web Component.
- With the cursor on the area where you want the hit counter placed, hit "Insert" on the File menu.
- Select "Web Component" to launch the "Insert Web Component" dialogue box.
- Highlight "Hit Counter" under Component type .
- Select a style under "Choose a counter style".
- Highlight the style you want, click "Finish" and "OK".
Simply save the page and upload it to your Web server once you are done inserting the hit counter. You will now be able to track the number of visitor hits your webpage gets.
