Trillian Messenger is a multipurpose instant messenger that allows you to add your account from AIM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Facebook, Myspace, and more. Having all of these different messengers combined into one is a great convenience, but sometimes adding your contacts to the messenger can become a little sticky. Here's how to go through the process, step by step, and make sense of the relatively painless method of adding contacts.

  1. First, click the Trillian menu in the top left hand corner of the Trillian program. Once this menu drops down, you will see the "Add Contact or Group" option third from the top. There is also an add contact button on the bottom left hand corner of Trillian. Once you've clicked "Add Contact or Group," a new box will open inside Trillian, with several different options and fields to type into.

    The options you will have are service, ID name, group and reason. All these fields are necessary except reason. Service is the type of messenger service your contact is using, like AIM or Windows Live. ID name is the contact's username, e-mail, or messenger name. This is where you will be adding the contact's messenger name. Group is how you can sort your contacts into different groups, such as friends, family, coworkers, and so on. You will also be able to add new, custom groups from this menu.

  2. Now that we know what these options are, we can begin to add your contacts to Trillian. First, you'll want to select the service your contact uses, such as Yahoo, Windows Live (MSN) and so on. If you don't know the name of the service, look at your contact's e-mail or username. For example, the end of the e-mail address will say one of several different "commercials ats" (such as @yahoo.com) and this will tell you which service to select.
  3. Once you're done selecting the service, you'll want to enter their ID name. This is simply the name your contact gave you. For example: 1234@yahoo.com.
  4. Under the Group option, you can either leave it alone or create a Group. For the contact to appear in "My Contacts," the default option, select a group from the menu that pops up, or make your own custom Group by selecting the "Add Group" option at the bottom of the Add Group menu.
  5. Finally, you can add a custom message in the "Reason" field so that once your contact is added, they will be notified of your intent when adding them.

Once you're done with these fields and options, click the "Add" button to add the contact, or the "Cancel" button to cancel the entire process. And voila, your contact is now added to Trillian!
