Adding songs from a CD to iTunes will save you the trouble of always having to place the CD in the computer to play it. You can add the songs to iTunes so you can just locate it in your library and play it from there.
- Activate iTunes on your computer. On a Windows Vista computer go to the Start menu and then type iTunes in the Search field. Double-click "iTunes" in the results list and then the program will open on your computer. On a Mac computer go to the Dock and click on the Finder application. Type "iTunes" in the search field at the top right corner of the Finder panel and then press Return. Click on "iTunes" under the Applications section and then the program will open on the computer.
- Internet Connection. The computer you are using should have a stable Internet connection. If you are using your laptop make sure you are within the WiFi coverage area. The iTunes program needs the Internet connection to look for information about the CD album or song you are going to add in iTunes.
- Select a CD. Browse through your CD collection and look for an album you want to add to iTunes. You won't necessarily be adding the whole album if you don't want to. You can select a song or a number of songs from the same album to add to iTunes. Make sure the CD is clean and free of scratches. Handle the CD carefully by placing your thumb at the edge and your index finger in the hole. Place the CD onto the CD tray on your computer and then close the tray.
- Add songs. When you place a CD into the CD tray on your computer the iTunes program will detect the action and will immediately scan the song files. While your computer is connected to the Internet the iTunes program will look for the exact information for each song. After placing your CD in the computer, the album name will appear on the left column under the Devices section. The list of songs and the artist will appear in the main window. A notification will appear on your screen asking if you want to import the CD into your iTunes library. If you want to add all the songs on the CD to iTunes, then click "Yes" but if you only want to add a song or two from the album click "No". If you clicked "Yes" iTunes will immediately add the songs and information to your library. If you clicked "No" you will be able to select the songs you want to add to iTunes from the CD. Remove the checkmarks from the songs you do not wish to add and then go to the bottom right corner and click the "Import CD" button.
The CDs in your collection can now be saved to iTunes. Just in case something happens to one of your CDs you will always have a copy on iTunes.
