Some Guidelines to Prevent Spam
By Issamu Okada
Getting spam is very annoying. Not only does spam clutter up your inbox, but sometimes it could be dangerous and fraudulent email which steals your bank account or does some other kind of criminal activity. Spam is sent many ways, but the most famous way is sending emails. But what most people aren't aware of is that the senders of spam often have your email address because you put it in some dubious web site, which registers your address in spam lists, or in a list to be sold to spammers. But spam is something that can be very easily avoided by following these guidelines:
- Be careful when entering your address. When some site asks for your email, you should be absolutely certain that the site is a safe one. Whenever you are in doubt, can't trust the site or see something fishy and suspicious about it, find out more about it by doing a search via a search engine.
- Use a disposable address. However, if you really need to register your address, and the site has a dubious reputation, you can use a disposable address service, such as Mailinator, or the BugMeNot email service. They provide temporary emails, which you can use for getting just a single message, so your main address won't be exposed to spammers.
- Don't expose your address. In a discussion forum, you may need to give your email address for someone so they can contact you. However, what most people don't realize is that spammers can get your address easily when you post it in a public location such as an open discussion forum, or a web site so people can contact you. Common methods to avoid this include using "AT" instead of "@" and "DOT" instead of the "." symbol when giving your address, because the spam bots won't realize it's an email address or how it is spelled. Another method you could use is to give your email in private ways, such as instant messengers or personal messages.
- Use a good email client or a web client. An anti-spam filter is something that most email clients today have, but with no doubt some work better than others. So, to avoid spam, having a good email client is essential, because it will filter your spam in a separate folder, so you can delete it. You can also use a web mail client, which is used directly with your browser, such as GMail, the Google email service, because it also has a very effective anti-spam filter system.
- Use common sense. It may be obvious, but I might as well emphasize it: Use common sense when using your email address.
Quick Tips:
Online gambling sites are sites that you shouldn't trust unless you are completely sure they are OK to give your address out to.

Thanks, very good practical tips. On the other hand, I presume if we already get spam, then we can use tactics to get rid of it, for example to report the suspicious addresses to the email service (some email services have the ability to block emails from spam addresses before reaching your inbox). If your email service provider doesn't have this, then you may alternatively set a rule in your inbox so that when suspicious emails arrive to your inbox, they are automatically moved to a particular folder that you have made for this purpose. You can later go and see the emails that you may need and the rest you can delete cumulatively.
Thanks there. Fighting spam has been an increasingly annoying process. I think enabling the spam guard can help. I have done it and I also report spam to scam@fraudinternational.com. A little bit of brains does the rest..... by deleting it to the trash bin. Overall, it was helpful.
Dear friend,
Your point number 2 is a very good suggestion.
