Firefox has become one of the most preferred web browsers today. It has many features, options, themes, plug-ins and add-ons that make browsing a great experience. There are themes to make the browser window different and relieve the boredom of looking at the same basic appearance of a browser. You can also change the colors and fonts of the browser to make it look sleeker and there are several add-ons and plug-ins that you can download and install to make Firefox suit your browsing needs and preferences as Firefox does not have a built-in filter to block particular Internet sites.

  • Go to the Firefox website and click on the add-ons tab. You can also make type some keywords in the search box and look for the application from the list of Firefox add-ons.
  • One of the add-ons that you can download and install is BlockSite This is a program that was created by Erik van Kempen and available as a free download from the Mozilla Firefox website. This program when installed will automatically block the websites that you have selected and will also disable all hyperlinks related to the particular websites.
  • Download and install the BlockSite add on. Restart Firefox and go to Tools from the Main Menu bar of the Firefox browser window. Click the Add-ons option to open the Add-ons dialog box where the list of add-ons and plug-ins that you have downloaded are listed. Choose BlockSite to bring up its own dialog box. The BlockSite Preferences box will have a list of preferences on the top section. To block websites select Enable BlockSite, Enable warning messages, Enable link removal and Blacklist. Click the Add button. A pop up window will come out where you will be able to type each of the URLs that you want blocked. Click the OK button after you have typed a web address. Continue the process until you are done. If you have a long list of websites to block you can make a text list of these websites in Notepad and just use the Import option to add all the websites in your list at once. You also have the option to set a password to the list so that no one can unblock, erase or override your block list. Check the Enable Authentication box and type in your password underneath. Make sure that you note down your password so you do not forget it. Hit the OK button once you are done.
  • To unblock some of the websites, go back to the Tools > Add-ons > BlockSite and choose the website you want to unblock and click the White List button. Do this for the rest of the websites that you wish to unblock before clicking the OK button. Provide your password if you have placed one.

That is how easy it is to block and unblock Internet sites with Firefox. There are other blocking/unblocking add-ons that you can download and install. Read the features of each one and choose the one that is right for your needs.
